My Egyptian Experience

Phil drove us to the airport, it was a bit, stop start but we arrived in plenty of time. Unfortunately after checking in I got a text from Phil to say that it had taken him 40 minutes in the road works just to get to the motorway. Anyway, the Easyjet flight was on time and we arrived in Sharm el Sheikh at 6 pm local time.   It was just a shame that it was already dark.   A short transfer and we soon got dropped off at our hotel, The Jolie Royal Peninsular Hotel, http://www.maritim.com/en/hotels/egypt/royal-peninsula-hotel-resort-sharm-el-sheikh/hotel-overview#hotel_content.

Our hotel hadn’t got very good reviews on Trip Advisor so I didn’t have any high expectations but I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised.  My room was massive; it had a great queen bed with white good quality Egyptian sheets which are my absolute favourite.  I had a massive bathroom, a fridge, a kettle and a good sized television with lots of English channels.   Sue had Ian said their room wasn’t as nice as the room they had the last time they stayed so they paid to upgrade.  They were still in the same block as me but just round the corner.

The resort was quite big and very spaced out but our block was near to the restaurant and bar.  The grounds were green and very well maintained.  It was a good ten minute walk to reception which was okay; I did this trip many times, as it was only place where you could get the free wi-fi.   The pool was massive with lots of free sun beds to choose from.  We were all inclusive; the staff were really friendly but I do think that was because we tipped quite generously.  Overall I thought are hotel was good, not five stars but maybe four stars, of course I have never been to Egypt before so I have nothing to compare it with.

The main slate on Trip Advisor was about the food but actually I thought it was some of best AI food that I have had.  I think this was because the food was prepared on site which I think makes a huge difference.  Okay, some of the dishes were bland and not very hot, but overall there was a selection with lots of good quality meat cooked on the BBQ outside.  That said, and I have to be honest, I had the shits all week with some days worse than others.  Whether this can be attributed to the food alone I don’t know, it could have been ice in the drinks, tap water for cleaning teeth and in the kettle, maybe a change of climate or just too much sun.  From what I have heard and read, this is one of the down sides of visiting Egypt.

One day we took a taxi and went to visit Naama Bay, just 10 minutes from our hotel.  It was a bit of a dump and walking down the main strip was a complete nightmare.  Lots of shops and stalls but we were hassled endlessly, so much so, that we didn’t buy anything.  Sue did buy some tobacco for her son but when she opened it, the packaging was rather dog-eared and the tobacco felt very hard.  We had a beer at a nice roof top terrace bar and then we went back to the hotel.

Sue and Ian did their best to include me (big thank you to both) but I have to say that I missed Phil, actually more than I thought I would.  Phil normally sorts out the luggage, he works out the safe and air conditioning, he also deals with all the money and tipping.  It felt like a part of me was missing.  I think he missed me as well, he was finding his course hard and one day I picked up an email saying that he was thinking of jacking it all in and flying out to join me.  I was half hoping that he would but I knew that Phil wasn’t a quitter so I was happy to pick up another email a couple of days later to say that things were going much better.

It was a short shuttle ride to the private beach which was lovely.  You could only get in the water via steps on a jetty because of the coral but that wasn’t a problem.  The waiters were friendly and helpful and the food at the bar was very good.  We had some nice days there.  Sue and Ian went to Soho Square to have a meal but I decided to opt out.  I spent time by the pool but I admit also to spending a lot of time in my room watching movies.  Some of this was by choice but some times I just had to be near a toilet!

I am not sure if I would go back to Egypt. I think it’s great that the sunshine is guaranteed but the Pharaoph's revenge is not a good experience. I have never been than comfortable in Muslim countries and from what I could see it wasn’t much to see outside of the hotel complex.  Okay I didn’t venture out much but when I could there was just a load of old buildings that I couldn’t work out whether they were has beens or going to be’s.  Certainly not a very pretty landscape.  I am sure the Pyramids are a sight to see and there are many artefacts along the Nile but that’s not really my bag.

We got picked up from the hotel just before 5 pm on Thursday and were all checked in for our flight by 6 pm.  Sharm airport was mad, we had a slice of pizza and a glass of red wine for a rip off price and then it was time to board.  The down side of flying to Egypt is the flight time, some 5 and half hours which seemed to drag.  I was quite lucky because I had a spare seat next to me which gave me extra room and the opportunity to sleep, which I did for 2 whole hours.  We arrived back in Luton at 5 past midnight; the pre-ordered taxi picked us up with no problems and I was back at the flat for quarter past one.  Of course in Egyptian time this was quarter past two.

Not surprisingly Phil was fast asleep in bed; it was quite comforting to hear his snoring from the bedroom. Yep I had a lovely time in the sunshine but I was glad to be home.  I think in some ways the time apart did us some good; Phil and I have known each for over 30 years and have been living together for 15 years. I think you do take each for granted sometimes and can get complacent.  Ten days apart has taught us that we do need each other, not in a lovey dovey way but it’s a bit like the feeling you get when you sink in to your favourite chair or sofa, it’s safe, comfy and familiar.  I don’t to liken by husband to a piece of old furniture but hopefully you all get my drift.

Phil was a very good boy whilst I was gone, he had done all his washing and ironing so I came back to an empty wash basket.  We have a very cheap crap washing machine so I had to laugh when he told me the cycle that he used took 2 and half hours. I had already left it on the speedy setting by the way.  Our tumble dryer on the other hand is very efficient and Phil put his washing in for way too long so it was over dry when it came out which made is difficult for him to iron.  He had also cleaned the toilet and washed the towels.  I also had a chuckle to see that the fridge was almost completely empty, obviously he hadn’t gotten round to doing a food shop. I had left Phil 5 ready meals and lots of snacks; he said he had 3 takeaways so I am guessing that he didn’t do any cooking.   Yes I think it can be safely said that my husband did miss me, if only for my domestic skills, lol.

Phil went to Cranfield on Friday giving me the whole day to sort myself out.  Lack of sleep and a different time zone left me feeling a bit zoned out but I slowly got throw my jobs.  Unpacking and then 6 loads of washing followed by drying and a huge pile of ironing.  I changed my bed and then went to Asda to do a huge food drop.  I went to DW for a work out but felt too knackered so just had a shower. I did visit the gym a few times whilst on holiday and with my dodgy tummy I did think I would have lost weight but nah, I weigh the same.  Diet starts tomorrow.

It felt good to fill my fridge and the cupboards again.  I made a corn beef hash which was Phil’s choice of homecoming meal and I was surprised and pleased when he got home early.  He said that he was going to take a night off from study, so we ate supper and then settled in to watch all of the recordings that he hadn’t watched whilst I was gone.  Not the soaps of course, I already caught up with these whilst doing the ironing.  Phil and I have recently started watching Goggle Box and on Friday night we watched the Celebrity Goggle Box.  This couple, Steph and Dom Parker are my favourites.

Yesterday Phil wanted the flat to himself so he could study so I took myself out just after 8 am. First up a quick trip to Asda and then Primark and then the gym.  I had a good workout and it didn’t hurt which surprised me.  I did go home to make us a quick lunch, quiche, salad and new potatoes and then it was straight back out to visit Harriet and Billy.  There new sofas arrived during the week and they look very nice.  They didn’t pick the cheapest but you tell the quality and they were very comfortable.  A comfy sofa/chair is a must in life!

Their house is coming along and they are gradually adding bits of furniture, the house just needs a bit more colour and some soft furnishings. I have agreed to meet Harriet after work on Thursday and we are going to look for curtains.  They do have a few jobs for Phil to do but I have told them these will have to wait until Phil finishes his exam in a couple of week’s time.

I picked up some bits and pieces in Newport and got home for 3 pm as I couldn’t think of anywhere else to go.  Phil was still studying but luckily I had a few phone calls to make and then my sister called so this killed some time.  Last night was a Ploughman’s for tea followed by catching up with X-Factor.  My time zone is all out and I got up at half four this morning.  Having been up for a couple of hours, feel tired now and am tempted to go to bed but I am afraid of waking up Phil.  I will probably catch up with paperwork and then get ready to drive to Melton to see Phil’s mum.  I think she has missed my weekly visits.  She is making me roast lamb with all the trimmings, my absolute favourite.  Good job the diet is staring tomorrow.

Claire's October

It’s been a long time since I last blogged.  I’m not really sure why but I haven’t felt the urge to sound off but I think I can put this down to the simple fact that I haven’t been up to anything much.  Harriet had 3 internal doors fitted in the upstairs of her house mid September and I offered to paint these for her.  Fortunately they had already been sanded down but I had forgotten just how much I hate glossing, especially doors.  I put on 3 layers of undercoat first and then one coat of gloss to finish, it seemed to take me forever.  I was pleased when they were done.  Harriet & Billy’s house is almost done, they just need to get new curtains and they want Phil to fit some new aluminium sockets in the kitchen then that’s it until next year.

Phil and I went to La Manga in Spain with Ian & Sue. Sue wanted to show Ian the part of Spain when she spent so much time and it gave me a chance to catch-up with my step dad and partner.  I did have my reservations about going because I knew I would get a lot of pressure to spend lots of time with my step dad.  It wasn’t the best of weeks away, it was better because we had a car and also we hired an apartment off the campsite.  The apartment was very comfortable and the weather for the first part of the week was great but then the weather changed and we had lots of rain along with thunder and lightening.  Personally I was glad to get home.  I sound like a right grumpy woman I know, and I am getting much worse.  I actually like my own company, sad really.

Unfortunately we had a late flight back from Spain and the following day Phil started his MSC at Cranfield.  Not the best start with only a few hours sleep and his first week did not go smoothly.  Phil got on much better the second week and he actually came home on Friday evening, happy and more confident.  Phil is loving his student life and I fear I have lost him to the world of academia. Oh well I suppose if it makes him happy that’s the main thing.

Last weekend we went to Sue’s son Matt’s wedding reception.  It was at the Holiday Inn by junction 14 on the Newport Road.  It was such a rainy day which was a real shame considering it was bright sunshine the day before and the day after.  We got there for 2pm and got home by 10pm.  Lots of celebrating and we were suffering the next day so it was a duvet day even though Phil should have really been studying.

I have updated my CV and have applied for a few jobs but I have not been successful in getting an interview which is rather depressing.  I did apply for a job stacking shelves at John Lewis and was successful with the online tests.  The group interview put me off so I didn’t pursue it any further.  I applied for a cleaning job and was interviewed by a nice girl called Caroline.  She took me on her books and I am hoping that she will have some cleaning jobs for me in a couple of weeks.  Basically I go in people’s houses, clean to a bespoke spec and get paid £8 an hour.  She says that because I don’t mind ironing and am willing to work weekends that she will be able to find me lots of work.  So it’s official, I am a scrubber!

Last Monday I got rid of the Freelander Land Rover.  I had 2 blokes out from the newspaper, the first chap only offered me £75 so I sent him away.  The second bloke offered me £200 which I accepted.  I probably could have got a lot more but I just wanted to get rid before the winter sets in.

My sister Julia came down from Suffolk on Saturday and stayed the night. The reason for her visit was that it was the first anniversary of my mum’s death and Mike, Janice & Pat wanted to mark the occasion.  I did lunch at the flat and then we went to see Harriet who was in the midst of cleaning.  To fill time me and Julia went to do a spot of shopping freeing up the flat so Phil could study.

Sue and Ian were booked to come out for dinner on Saturday evening but they cancelled because Sue had a dodgy tummy and so Phil decided to opt out.  So it was just me and Julia that met up with Mike and the others at The Bull in Stony Stratford.  I hadn’t seen them for ages so it was nice to catch up although Janice and Pat were not in the best of health.   Janice has DVT in both her legs and Pat is on medication for a dodgy hip.  The meal was okay; Pat very kindly paid for us all and I felt bad for her because at the end of the evening she was spewing her guts up in the toilet.  Julia thought this was down to the medication that she’s on and not down to the food at The Bull. I think she’s right but I wouldn’t recommend The Bull.  I certainly won’t be going back.

Phil made bacon sandwiches on Sunday morning, Julia went home and Phil took himself off to Cranfield leaving me home alone.  Not for long though, I went to the gym and then went to The Odeon to watch a film called ‘Gone Girl’.  There was only me and 2 other couples in the cinema.  Gone Girl has only just been released but I had seen it before on the television so I think it must be adapted.  Shame really because I remembered the entire plot so really wished I had opted to see a different film.  Still it killed 3 hours as I went in at 11am and came out at 2 pm.  Phil went to the library at Cranfield and I cooked lunch which we had when he got back.

Tomorrow I fly to Sharm el Sheik with Sue and Ian for 10 days.  Phil was booked to go but he can’t go because of his course schedule. When Phil decided he couldn’t go I did say to Sue that I probably wouldn’t go but then following day the weather was foul outside so I changed my mind.  When I look at the weather today I am so glad I did.  Today I have packed my case and Phil is taking us to Luton airport at quarter past seven tomorrow morning.

I have cleaned the flat from top to bottom, changed the bed and stocked the cupboards.  Phil will be fine; actually he’s probably quite looking forward to having the place to himself.  He will be able to have all his papers scattered everywhere and will be able to study to his hearts content.  I on the other hand, am looking forward to 10 days of lying vertical on a sun bed sipping a gin and tonic.  Yes a holiday is just what the doctor ordered, rest and relaxation before I start my new life as a scrubber.

Phil's catch up October

Well, its such a long time since my last blog, mainly because I have been up to my ears in getting ready for this new MSc course at Cranfield University.  I havent had time to do one since our July holiday.  Anyway, Harriet and Billy finally got the keys for their new house in Newport after it seemed like it never would exchange.  Here is Billy just after picking up the keys and entering for the first time.

We all lent them a little hand here and there and they now just about have it sorted out and it looks really nice.  We also had another weekend in the caravan when the air show was on with the red arrows.

It was quite a nice display but they are so fast its hard to catch them on film.  We have hardly had time to stay at the caravan this year.

Sue and Ian stopped for the weekend as well.  In fact Sue and Ian liked it so much they have bought another caravan near the lake and intend to live there full time when its done up.  Here is Claire in the morning talking to a bear.

Sue put on a special party at her house for Ian’s birthday.  They had a local group on called Bedazzled.

They had a great big marquee tent in the garden and three BBQ’s which Ian and myself tended.  Usual trick of cooking twice as much meat as was required.  A great night though and on Ian’s actual Birthday, Sue gave him another present every hour throughout the day.

I even managed to squeeze in my graduation ceremony which was held at MK Theatre.  Lots of queuing and waiting around, I enjoyed it but wont bother again if I get any more degrees.

Sue and Ian finally got their new caravan and the work was finished.  We all stayed for the weekend in the old caravans then they moved into their new one when we headed home.

It was great as they had Madness on at the club house.

They had a groupie that was really boogeying on down.

Time for our holiday in La Manga where Claire’s step Dad, John and Marie are for the next 6 months.  We stopped at the Barge for Sunday lunch on the way as we had a nice meal there with Jim and Shirley after my graduation.

First night there, we cooked for the crowds.  It was a very nice two bed apartment.

Unfortunately we got the single beds without aircon so I didn't sleep very well all week.

We had a very nice balcony and spent most of our evenings there.  This time we were determined not to be driven by the others taking us everywhere all the time.

They also had an indoor pool which opened when we left.

It was a big apartment block that the locals call Taliban towers.  You can see Sue and Ian on our balcony that overlooked the pool.

Its a very nice spot with a long 17km peninsular forming an inland sea within the Mediterranean.

Ian, a retired beach bum had to come out of retirement.

It was very hot the first half of the week so the others spent time sunbathing by the pool which gave me chance for revision on the balcony.  Everybody was happy.

We had a car for the week and one day we drove to the end of the peninsular which is swamp land with gaps through to the Med.  Its lovely as most of the time you can see the sea on both sides as you drive down.

To get to the end you have to drive over a really severe hump back bridge.  This picture doesn't do it justice.

We drove with John and Marie up to the National Park.  Very pretty everywhere but dreadful roads.

We had another trip out to a town where they have a battle reenactment every year celebrating a battle between local tribes and the Romans where 2000 people in costume play it out.  We went via the pretty route and had another two cars following us.

Its an old walled town of Cartehagen with a Bull ring thats being renovated at the moment.

Unfortunately, although it started out fine the heavens opened up and the whole thing was cancelled.  I was soaked to my underpants.  I have never been caught out in the rain as bad in my entire life.  It was raining so hard you couldn't see to drive and rivers ran across the road.  Strangely when we got back they had had no rain at all and it was still sunny there.

Sues son Mat and Nic got married yesterday and we went to the reception.  What a shame about the weather, its been nice for so long and changed on the day.

This little one had the same made to measure suit as the groom.

The bride and groom sat on their own table which I haven't seen before.  They have a modern mixed up family so it was a good decision otherwise fights may have broken out.

There were a lot of children at this wedding all about the same age so they thought it was their party.  I love this picture but you have to read the sign to appreciate it.

Here we are having started my course at Cranfield University this week with our double screen lectures.  It is so intense I cant explain, they expect the vast majority of the work to be done at home.  For every 30 hours of lectures they expect 70 hours in your own time.  Its also very front heavy with the first 5 weeks being solid lectures followed by two exams.  That means before the exams we have to somehow fit in 350 hours into our own time.  Impossible if you sleep.
