Well, we have been very sociable for the last week which has
been good but a little tiring; I don’t think we have had one night in. Last Thursday we went to open mike at The Volts
bar in Stony Stratford with Sue and Ian.
I drove because I had to be up early the following morning. The pub was packed but we were lucky enough
to get a seat. The vibe was great but I
can’t say the same for the music which in my opinion was crap. I am not sure it
was really my scene but Sue said that it got better after we left. We got home about quarter to eleven which was
late enough for me.
Last Friday I drove to Melton to see mum. I left at quarter past seven and had a good
run on the M1 but then I got caught up in all the rush hour traffic in Melton,
not helped by an accident blocking off a lane.
Never mind, I sorted out mum’s paperwork and then took her to the
doctors for a blood pressure test with her GP.
Whilst we were with the doctor I asked if mum could have a hearing test
at the local hospital, he checked her ears and said there was a lot of
wax. He said that she should try ear
drops for 3 weeks and if no improvement, he was organise a hearing test. I
brought her some olive oil drops from Boots, much better than olive oil that
she had been spooning in her ears. I did
a few more jobs then drove to the caravan to meet Phil.
We had decided to go over to pay Dennis and also to weed the
patio. I guess that I got to the van
about half four and was really pleased that Phil had done the weeding for
me. I unpacked and swept up and then we
walked to the club house via the lake.
It was a beautiful evening and we sat outside with a drink (a couple
actually) and watched the sun go down.
I left the caravan before Phil on Saturday morning and went
home to do some jobs. Phil got back
around lunchtime, we had quiche and salad for lunch and then drove over to
Sue’s to share a jug of sangria before going to Pauline’s barbeque. Pauline wrote her car off the week before and
I’d offered to lend her my little car until she can sort out a new one which she
was grateful for. At the bbq, I had a
sausage in a roll but didn’t eat the chicken because it wasn’t cooked. We got a taxi back to Sue’s and ended up
staying for ages. The plan was to watch
England play but we ended up going home not long after the game started.
Both Phil and I felt a bit fragile on Sunday morning but I
did manage to go the gym. I impressed
myself. At lunchtime we walked to The
Ship Ashore to meet Jim & Shirley and Dan and Kylie for a post wedding
lunch. Shirley’s brother and his family were there also. Kylie looked as fresh as a daisy in spite of
only getting to the UK the day before.
Dan didn’t look so bright but he’d been on his stag night the evening
before. It was nice to catch up with
them both because unfortunately we can’t go to their Wedding reception
tomorrow. Congratulations guys and we
hope you enjoy your special evening.
Whilst I was sorting out the insurance for Pauline on my
car, I realised that Phil’s MOT ran out at the end of January so I took it into
Days Garage to get it sorted. Luckily
they gave me a courtesy car which was a good thing because the Peugeot failed
the MOT. It was a quiet night at home on
Monday. Phil was back to work on Tuesday
and I picked up Nicola and took her for another workout at the gym. The gym was really busy but we still managed
to have quite a good workout. In the
evening I went to Sue’s to have supper with her and Pauline. Sue had cooked really tasty pasta dish and
garlic bread which I ate lots of. Phil
said I reeked of garlic the next morning, he said it was the worst I have ever
smelt. He was pleading with me not to
talk so I must have been really garlicky!
On Wednesday morning Sue picked me up and we went to the
centre to do a bit of shopping. Then we
went to the nail bar to get Shellac nails. Sue had had them before but I hadn’t. A couple of the machines weren’t working
correctly and it was touch and go as to whether we could get them done. We did eventually get them done and they are
brilliant. If they last for 3 weeks
which they are meant to then I will definitely get them done again. After nails we went into Prett for tea and a
sandwich and then Sue dropped me home. I
got started on the holiday packing and then Sue picked me up at half four to
take me to my appointment in far Bletchley with Jan the physic. I had been about 10 years ago and remember
being very impressed. This, however,
wasn’t the case on Wednesday. I let slip
that my mum had recently died and she focused on this. I had the tarot cards
done which were all positive but overall it was a waste of time and money.
Sue cooked me supper again on Wednesday evening and I stayed
the night at hers because we were going to Ladies Day at Ascot the following
morning. It wasn’t a late night and we
were both up at 6am yesterday. We had showers and then dressed up in our
finery and then got a taxi to The Swan at Milton Keynes Village. Sue and I were the first ones there; the
coffee was already made so we had a cup whilst we were waiting for the rest of
our party. There were 6 of us in our
group but there were about 60 ladies going on the coach. We had paid for a champagne breakfast as part
of the day but I have to say it wasn’t very organised. I did have a sausage sandwich but they
couldn’t cook the food fast enough so there were long queues. I wasn’t sure I could drink champagne first
thing in the morning but it was okay after the first glass.
All was going well at this point and then it started to go
badly wrong. First up the driver said
that there were delays on the M1 so we would leave a little later than
planned. Sue had taken 2 bags with 4
bottles of champagne and nibbles which she and I put on seats on the coach so
the 6 of us could sit together. When we
got on the coach we realised that somebody had moved our bags. Sue argued with another couple of girls so we
did actually sit together. One of the
organisers ticked us off on the list and we eventually set off. The first bottle of champagne was opened and
we were getting in the Ascot mood and then we suddenly realised that we were
back at The Swan where he started.
It was announced that there was a problem with the suspension
so we had to get off the coach. The
staff at the pub laid on wine and beer and we waited for about an hour and a
half before another coach turned. Our
party got the minibus which we thought would get us there quicker. We set off and another bottle of bubbly was
opened and I guess it was about half two by the time we reached our
destination. Unfortunately poor Karen decided to throw up everywhere before the
doors were opened. We mopped her up as
best we could but it was obvious she wasn’t well. We placed bets and drank more champagne and I
am sad to say that we didn’t even see one race. The atmosphere was brilliant though and the
sun was shining. I think we were in the
silver ring. We got back to the mini
bus only to discover that somebody had pinched Sue’s bag with 2 bottles of
champagne in and 2 packets of fags. Sue
was not impressed and neither was I especially as Sue had checked that the mini
bus would be locked.
It was planned that Ian would pick up Phil and would meet us
back at The Swan when we returned from Ascot but then he broke down in Sue’s
car at Tesco’s so Phil had to go pick up.
They met up with Roger and George for a meal at the pub. All the girls were knackered so we didn’t
stay long at the pub. It was a long
day. Sue very generously paid for my
ticket to Ascot as an early birthday present and I think she was disappointed
that the day didn’t go as planned. But I
had a great day in spite of everything. So thank you my friend.
I felt like death warmed up this morning and was up making
tea around half five, way too early.
Phil was on a mum visit and left the flat at 7.30 am. I am
without a car but that was okay, it gave me a chance to catch up with
domestics. I changed my bed and washed
the towels. Sue picked me up and I went
to hers for tea and then she took me into Newport so I could pick up Phil’s
prescription.
Today has been a quiet one catching up with stuff before
going on holiday tomorrow. I am looking
forward to our cruise. We are staying
near Gatwick tomorrow evening and then we are being picked up to go to the
airport at 4am on Sunday morning. Venice
here we come!
