BARI

Bari is the second most important centre of southern Italy after Naples and is a port and a university city.  The city was probably founded by the Peuceti tribe but passed under Roman rule in the 3rd century BCE and established itself as a port for eastern trade.

Bari’s cuisine is based on the three main agricultural products of the area, wheat, olive oil and wine.  Sounds like it might suit the girls, pasta with wine.

Our room is quite adequate but very compact.  The bathrooms the same but at least it saves time; you can sit on the toilet whilst having a shower.

We got to Bari at about 12.30 and we had agreed to get a cab at 1.30.  The ship has a shuttle but its €8 each so €32 for us all and we thought it would be cheaper for a taxi.  Sue and Ian decided not to go ashore this time and rather chill out in the pool to try and come down from yesterdays trauma.  As it wasn't far Claire and I walked into town but it was blistering hot.

It seems that Bari is an old town with little narrow streets and stone walls.  It wasn't long before we stumbled across a church called, “Basilica di san Nicola”.

There were lots of other old buildings and museums in the same area.  I had a walk around while Claire sat in the internet cafe. i had already put some pictures on our first blog.  I tried the exit under the arch and came out to the coast again.

There wasn’t many shops so I took a couple of pictures and wandered back again.  I was looking for an ATM to get some Euros.

Back past the old buildings and narrow streets and struggled to find Claire again.  We paid up and left but Claire had blisters and had to walk bare foot which wasn't easy because the pavements were so hot.  She was dancing around like she was on hot coals.

We never did find and ATM but we did find a castle and lots more hot coals.  I ended up having to give Claire a piggy back all the way back and it nearly killed me.  I am now suffering from a terrible back.  Just going to lie down in a darkened room.
